This is wonderful! I am used to seeing your sculptures transform stiff, solid matter into a more biological, soft space. In this case, however, I see you playing on the stone's stiffness, solidity and non-organic feel (Even the organic flow of water in this piece is artificial and frozen). I love that the little people are washing a giant coin. It makes me wonder if these tiny folk spent all their time digging those massive stairs to get to the coin...only to spend their time lavishing affection on it. It certainly transforms the money into an absolute icon. For me it really hints to the impracticality of money (such a large and unwieldy coin), the beauty/seduction of money (the brilliant metal may be made of minerals like the stone but it is far more refined and shiny), the fact that money (and beauty) has the power to force humans to stretch their boundaries (these wee people making such HUGE stairs and then toting all that water up and down) and the entire sculpture reminds me that money/capitalism/exchange/finance is nothing but a human construct.
Your word is wonderful sir, I am glad I found your page!
